ABOUT THE BOOK

Can't See Why Not

Rick Murphy fixes problems for a living and knows a little about a lot. He also has a habit, picked up from his old road-trip buddy, Ando. When someone suggests something slightly unreasonable, he shrugs and says four words: Can't see why not.Which is how he found himself paying his respects to James Dean, standing in the shadow of a seven-story concrete Jesus in the Ozarks, and driving into a one-lane Alaskan mountain tunnel to reach an isolated coastal community. Along the way, his eight-year-old daughter hunted Bigfoot in an Illinois cornfield, his toddler son waged a losing war against banana chips, and he stared down a bear on the Appalachian Trail (or the other way around). But every trip carries more than luggage, and not all of it fits neatly in the trunk. Now, nearly ten years after the first edition (give or take; he's not great with math), he has remarried, blended a new family, and become a grandfather, which turns out to be the best seat in the car for looking back. So he has a few more stories to tell. This expanded second edition is heartfelt, funny, and insightful: a book about family, about the road, and about the difficult grace of letting go.

Inside the book: Part One, The Original Collection, 36 essays. Part Two, Ten Years On, 13 new essays. Every chapter ends with a Rest Stop of reflection questions.

Keep looking out the window.
That's where life happens.

Fabledawg Books

Wisdom and good company.

A fable is a story that carries a little wisdom inside it. A good dog is a loyal companion who brings joy just by being there. At Fabledawg Books, we think the best books are a bit of both: stories and ideas that help us make sense of life, and good company for the journey.
